For a long time it was thought that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, attention deficit hyperkinetic disorder), is a common condition to kids and that as we mature, disappears. Recent research shows that adults have ADHD and that this disorder seriously affects their daily activities and performance at work.
Hyperkinetic disorder with attention deficit always begins in childhood, but may go unnoticed. The events can be easily confused with lack of discipline or lack of education, because a child with ADHD can’t focus long enough on some proposed activities, and therefore lose interest very quickly and becomes agitated, restless, disturbing work of others.
However, a diagnosis can’t be established earlier than school age, because concentration problems, agitation, irritability, inability to prioritize and lack of organization, specific to ADHD are clearly visible only in a very well structured organization.
When the condition is not treated in childhood, persists into adulthood. Statistics show that 60% of children with ADHD become adults with ADHD, if they don’t receive specific therapy.
ADHD is a barrier to career
If a child with ADHD have learning problems although it is obvious to everyone that has potential, for an adult things tend to complicate even further. As responsibilities grow and requires constant action, to follow the same line to build a career or relationships with others, adults with ADHD feels overwhelmed. Even with routine tasks involving minor things, the adult with ADHD is overwhelmed.
He can’t focus all the way to the tasks he have to meet, forget what to do, fails to be attentive to details, drop out to start other activities, so why he can’t be good at work. To these may be added an impulsive behavior too. Therefore, adults with ADHD have problems to maintain professional relationships, but also preserve natural human relationships.
Are considered irresponsible people
Hyperactivity that manifests in childhood by unusual playing craving, becomes an annoying anxiety when he became an adult. The other hyperkinetic perceive the adult as a person who creates chaos, unpredictable and that, moreover, it induces a state of their agitation. Therefore, there are few people who prefer their company.
Rudeness is also on the agenda, because adults with ADHD late for meetings, are careless with their look and because of the fear that they will forget their ideas, or they have no patience, they constantly interrupts their interlocutor and talks lose the point. Because they have clearly defined priorities for the radical decisions spontaneously, without consulting with relatives, are often categorized as difficult and irresponsible people.
Failures will push them to depression
Talking about career, an adult with ADHD hasn’t a brilliant journey, considering that isn’t constant in the choices he make. He often change his job, usually in other areas as may appear attractive at the moment, so he never has enough experience to be promoted. Therefore has a low socioeconomic status. Family relationships are difficult, while the incidence of divorce is higher among adults with ADHD.
All these aspects increase the risk of such person to depression. More specifically, the data show that adults with ADHD have a six times higher risk of depression compared to a person who is not suffering from this disorder. Serious is that people with ADHD are not mild depression, but only severe responding only to medical treatments, not just to psychological therapy.
