Nowadays (with the change in weather and more humid climate approaching), there are a lot of people who are taking precautions to avoid any sort of infectious diseases. As a physician, I myself have come across many patients who wanted to make sure that there sickness or any symptoms experienced doesn’t lead to any infection.
Even so, a woman last week inquired me whether her child was showing any symptoms of viral infection. These people know that infection can be troublesome for the entire house and try to prevent such an occurrence. However, all diseases are not viral or infectious.
Some of the common infectious diseases affecting the population these days include:
- Caused by the varicella zoster virus, Chicken Pox was usually taken as a child illness but in recent years, it has started affecting adolescents and adults too. It is transmitted with direct contact with any infected person. Using common preventive measures or vaccine can help in preventing the disease.
- Another common disease is strep throat which indicates different problems like bruises, chills, fever, feeling ill, malaise, discomfort, swelling on neck and/or difficulty in swallowing. It can transmit with direct contact and the best form of prevention is to avoid any contact with patient till the fever has been cured.
- Another common infectious disease is hepatitis. It is seen in three different types and all of them are caused due to viruses. The most common among the three is hepatitis A which generally lasts for a period of less than six months. Hepatitis A and C are the major causes of liver diseases. The treatment and prevention can depend on the trait of the virus and the amount of exposure a person has on other members of the family or his/her friends. Common management techniques can be employed to ensure that proper prevention is done.
- Another common infectious disease is pneumonia. It affects single or both lungs of a person and usually occurs when a person breaths in a fungi, virus or bacteria.
